Skype is a wonderful technology tool for communication purposes. Skype allows computer users to make a "phone call" to another computer user and has the capability to see that person simultaneously by using video chat. The program is available as a free download and is easily accessible to anyone with computer access.
There are some wonderful advantages to using skype in the classroom. First, it enhances any lesson by allowing first-hand communication with others. Students can interact via skype with professionals in a particular field or with other students across the globe. The tool increases efficiency because it is free and allows for speedier, more readily available communication for interaction.
Students can use skype for collaboration on group projects and likewise, teachers can use skype to contact parents in the event that physical one on one conferences were not possible.
Teachers should discuss appropriateness with students when using skype in the classroom. Not only do the students need to be able to work the program correctly, they should also practice good ediquette when speaking with professionals or other student. Perhaps one of the disadvantages to skype, however, is that teachers aren't able to monitor student behavior ahead of time as skype phonecalls take place in real time.
But, overall, it is clear that skype is both an exciting form of technology communication that can, in fact, be a viable tool in terms of classroom curriculum.
